Where's The Sheep?

The other night I was trying to think of something good to make for dinner that was not the usual fare. Having four children of varying ages often makes dinner selection an arduous task to say the least.

While searching the recipe box in my mind, I remembered one of my favorite dishes as a child, Meat Pies. My Mom used to make the best Meat Pies ever. Simple as they are to make, I never once attempted them as an adult. And now was no different, I didn't make them that night either.

I did however, come up with another genius idea. Derived from the Meat Pie idea, I decided to attempt for the very first time, A Shepherds Pie! One problem though; not only will the kids not eat lamb, neither will my wife or I. We do however like beef, so the obvious solution was to make a "shepherds" pie with beef; A Rustler's Pie, if you will.

I started the night before I wanted to make it because the top round roast has to cook for a pretty long time. In fact, I was able to do the corn filling the night before as well. That only left the garlic mashed potatoes and assembly before dinner.

It had been my hope while preparing this dish, for the somewhat lengthy process that it was, that all of my wonderful, not finicky eater children would take one look at that dish full of ingredients (all of which they like) put together and say "yum yum Daddy that looks great!" Well 3 out of 4 aren't bad. My littlest guy didn't want anything to do with it. No matter what my wife tried he wasn't having it. All of a sudden he doesn't like beef, corn or potatoes.

My wife, my three oldest kids and I, we thought it wasn't baaaaaaaad.
